Don’t judge. Black Friday is awesome. When I’m wearing my $4 tights I’ll be thinking of you sleeping, and me WINNING!

Pantry Eating. Sort Of.

Having been in Minnesota last weekend, and with a Labor Day trip to Michigan on the horizon, PT and I haven’t done a lot of grocery shopping lately. We were living on what I had brought back from Michigan, and as that was running out we were only a few days away from Minnesota. We are making a master grocery list for Meijer while we are in Michigan, and tallying the fruits and veggies we are going to get, measured in bushels, at roadside stands.

So we are getting creative!

We had beet I wanted to use up, but no greens so I couldn’t make a salad. I automatically think about rice when I’m using up leftover food because stir fry is such an easy way to thrown everything together, but beet stir fry? I didn’t think so.

But rice=risotto… beet risotto? With corn!

This was so good. Sure, food shouldn’t be that color, but damn! I made risotto like usual, roasted the beets and chopped them, threw in half a can of corn with the beets at the very end with some Parmesan! Amazing.

Last night I had to use up carrots, cucumber, pineapple, corn, and goat cheese. Without buying any other ingredients. So, naturally, I thought of rice, and figured I could use everything but that pesky goat cheese in a stir fry.

So cooked up some brown rice and I sauteed some onions, added carrots, cucumber, pineapple, and corn, PT did some fancy seasoning and saucing, and we finished it with both sesame seeds and cashews. It was great! I love pineapple in stir fry.

But, we still have three dinners left and I’m running out of options.

Not to mention breakfast! We are out of milk and fruit, so oat bowls are a no go.

We had picked up some steel cut oats at Green Grocer a couple weeks ago, and this cool weather begs me to get the crock pot back out!

We threw some oats in the crock pot last night with raisins, some butter, cinnamon, and a lot of water, and in the morning it was done! We ate half our bowls,  with brown sugar on top! It was so much food; but that just means we already have tomorrow’s breakfast.

This was a MESS, though. I washed the crock pot once already, and it’s soaking a second time. Might not be worth it.

I realize that when normal people eat out of their pantries they eat, like, cans of beans with mustard. We aren’t quite there yet. But tonight’s dinner? No idea. I’ve got a bag of potatoes, some onions, and goat cheese. I don’t even have pan cake mix! Goat cheese risotto? hehe

This should start getting interesting.

The Sweatshop: For Men

In an attempt to ease The Sweatshop’s ever-increasing holiday workload, today’s blog entry has been outsourced to the Web’s foremost kind-of blogger/twitter-lover, PT.

Prior to Allyson and I dating, my dietary habits were not exactly spectacular. I wasn’t ExtraValuin’, DoubleCheesin’ and TripleThickMilkshakin’ myself to an early, artery-clogged grave by any means. But I definitely did not always chose the most practical or most imaginative option when it came to feeding myself. Since I graduated from college and started working full-time, I purchased every single lunch from one of many of the Loop’s various eateries. While I would always try to be as health-conscious as possible with my lunch choices, I was spending bundle on my mid-day meals. To look back and do the math, to think about the amount of money spent over the years on eating meals out every day is both alarming and embarrassing. I justified doing this because A) I wanted to sleep in as much as humanly possible in the morning B) I felt I deserved a treat for working a job I didn’t like, and C) I couldn’t possibly make a delicious lunch for myself in the time between waking up and leaving for work.

When Allyson caught wind of what I had been doing for lunch for the past few years, she was less than thrilled “Seriously PT? Seriously?“. From there, a challenge was made. For the whole month of February, I didn’t eat out for a single meal. We packed lunches in the morning, and I soon realized how easy and inexpensive it was to put together a great lunch at home. It felt so great to know I was saving upwards of $7/day by brown baggin’ it. Once March 1st hit, Allyson ended our eating-out fast with brunch at Handlebar, and I was successfully deprogrammed of my prior work-lunch habit.

This week I pleasantly surprised to see when Allyson threw together a gigantic batch of these cold Asian noodles with seasonal veggies (yellow squash, green beans, corn, and cucumber). It was enough for her meal that night, and for two lunch-sized portions  for us to eat the next day. We generally used chow-mein noodles when we make this dish, but Allyson substituted whole wheat spaghetti. The summer veggies all tasted so fresh and went so well with the noodle’s sweet and spicy dressing.

Again, to look back at my old lunch habits, a lunch like this– which aside from probably not existing anywhere in the downtown area– would probably cost $6-8 if it were purchased at My Thai or Wow Bao.

Yesterday, with a fresh loaf of bread baked, nothing sounded better to me for lunch than a tuna sandwich.

When I moved out my old apartment a while back, my then-roommate bequeathed to me several cans of hella-fancy white albacore. We were down to our last can, and I couldn’t think of anything better to nosh on at the end of my work week than this sophisticated sandwich.

CUCUMBERS ON TUNA. I cannot endorse this enough. For one reason of another, I was a tad skeptical this combo would be good. My God, I feel so foolish for questioning Allyson’s tuna-related recommendations.

To think that I’d be missing out on meals like this if I were still stuck in my eat-out-every-day rut is sad. Not only saving money, but getting to use your imagination to create an awesome meal for yourself is such a treat. I’ve made it my mission to try and convert many of my co-workers who eat like I once did. I haven’t been as successful as I would hope; but if I can at least annoy and make my co-workers feel bad about the decsions they’re making, I’ll have done my job, right? Right?

…I’m starting to see why I  eat a majority of my homemade lunches alone.

Lunches are only half of my ore-Allyson not-stellar eating habits. I’ve always loved to cook; but I when work would get stressful, and all I wanted to when I came home was kick up my feet and watch It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia on Hulu, I’d keep pre-processed meals on hand to both maximize my lazy time and a minimize any extra ‘work I had to put into my evening. Granted not EVERY meal was this way, but I had two major FoodCrutches I loved to keep on hand for nights like these: Soy Nuggets and frozen pizzas. The former I admittedly still crave from time to time. Soy Nuggets + Sweet and Sour sauce are easy (and somewhat embarrassing) comfort food. Frozen pizzas on the other hand, are totally a thing of the past since Allyson adn I have more or less perfected the art of the homemade pizza.

This week we threw together a yellow squash, caramelized onion, and pineapple pizza. Aside from letting the pizza dough rise, there really isn’t a terrible discrepancy between the time it takes to make a homemade pie vs. a frozen pizza. The taste of every ingredient in this pizza shines, somethinf I could never say about a frozen pizza which, while easy to make, tasted homogenized as F. Side note: I put green olives on my half of this pizza and it was incredible. Olives get a bad rap on this blog; and I want to let all your olive lovers out there know that the green olive/pineapple combo is a match made in HEAVEN. it’s going to be my new go-to, the sweet, salty, briny, combo canNOT be beat.

So last night, it was my night to make dinner for Allyson and me. While looking for a recipe which included several of the veggies Allyson scored in Michigan, I stumbled upon this recipe for a warm lentil salad with roasted beets and goat cheese. I apologize for the above photos not really doing the dish justice, but, this salad was amazing! Allyson had reservations prior to her first bite. I’ll concede that the plate did look a bit like brown mush with these bright beets stacked on top, but the lentils were so flavorful, and both the sherry vinegarette and goat cheese made this salad a bright and satisfying home-cooked triumph.

8.22.09 beets 006 (2) To wash it all down, we cracked open this bottle of Leelanau Cellars Gerwurztraminer– a gift from Allyson’s mom.  It was exciting because this was a type of wine neither of us had ever heard of (Note: this wine was not chilled prior to us opening it, so please note the ice cubes in our wine glasses. We are officially senior citizens over here.). Gerwurztraminer must be German for Diabetes-enducer, because this was probably the sweetest non-dessert wine I’ve ever had. It was delicious, and went really well with our savory-as-hell lentil salad. The back of the bottle says the contents of this bottle of wine holds the “Taste Northern Michigan”. Who knew record unemployment rates could taste so sweet? AWWWWWW DAAAAAMN! BITING WINE-RELATED SOCIAL COMMENTARY! OH NO I DIDN’T!

In conclusion, some of the best times Allyson and I have had together are while we’re blazing new trails in the kitchen. Not only has our relationship yielded a more hands-on, thrifty way of looking at food for me; but it also given us fond memories and a more-expansive culinary skill set. That being said. I am inviting you all, the entire internet, over to our house for the meal of your choosing. And if you choose soy nuggets, we may be best friends for life.

You Know, Like the Olympics

Elizabeth and I met at Adrian College our freshmen year. We were both there for only one year, but the year highlights include strip monopoly, Optical Illusion Boy, me living off cookies and coffee for 9 months, Cripple Boy, Brad playing Oasis and Travis nonstop, Dreamy Matt Rife, Chelsea and I becoming drummers, The Gloworm, and a WHOLE lot of boy drama. Elizabeth, Chelsea, Lindsay and I, while recapping our weekends one Monday at lunch, discovered that between the four of us we made out with enough boys in the past 2 days to field a baseball team.

Elizabeth and I hadn’t seen each other since my 21st birthday party four and a half years ago. You know, like the Olympics.  She lives in Columbus, just far enough away from Chicago to make that an inconvenient drive. But she did it Friday! And 7 hours later she was in, and then we were out, of Chicago.

We had to drive out to St Charles for Colleen’s birthday party. After Elizabeth’s drive, and I had just gotten back in the city a couple hours before as well, we weren’t exactly pumped about the two hour drive through traffic to the burbs, but we had to do it for Colleen.

Saturday morning we made blueberry pancakes with the abundance of blueberries I brought back from Michigan, and potatoes with fresh dill.

It was hot and sunny and beautiful in Chicago Saturday, so Elizabeth and I walked around Logan Square and Wicker Park for a while with iced coffees before heading to Handlebar for a late lunch.

They went very well with the beet salad and corn on the cob we made for dinner. Elizabeth has never eaten beets before, and she gave this a thumbs up! Naturally.

After dinner it stopped raining enough for us to drive over to North Avenue Beach, something we had been talking about all weekend, but with the Air and Water Show and it being 90 degrees, it was crowded and loud all weekend.

Of course, without sun the water was a little cold! This was about as far as we could make it.

But the city was beautiful and the beach was empty. There was even a storm over the water we were watching for a while.

I think we showed Elizabeth a good time. I mean, who doesn’t like blueberry pancakes, clue, and the night beach?

It was nice to be back in the city for me, too. Sleeping in a bed was sweet! Seeing the kitties, and PT, was much needed. And those four pounds I didn’t gain while home I sure gained this weekend!

I’m looking forward to seeing Elizabeth again in four and a half years for my 30th birthday party! We planned this one out well, actually.

You may remember that I’ve had trouble with my grandma liking things I’ve made for her in the past. The key here is to catch her off guard and not let her ask for things. She didn’t even know these mittens existed, or that she needed two texture mittens in her life, thus she loved them. I’m catching on.

Second of all, my pickles! Which turned out super delicious. My mom put them in a beautiful jar and they look rustic and country, in the best way possible. They are dilly and sweet but not overly so, and a hit!

Monday I left you with a going to the casino teaser blog that I set up on Sunday, but I did not, in fact, go to the casino on Monday. Huge storms went through West Michigan Sunday night causing a ton of damage and knocking out power to a whole lot of the area, including the cabin, excluding my grandparent’s house, but, related or not, their huge fancy new TV went out.

So Papa and I went to Best Buy, they told us to bring the TV in, we went back to their house, somehow I got that TV in the car, we drove back to Best Buy, we exchanged it, somehow I brought it back in their house and set it up, and by that time it was after 1pm, and there was no time for the casino. So we went to Meijer instead and Papa and I got groceries, which, to my papa, is just as fun as going to the casino.

We made plans to go to the casino the next day. I went home so tired from carrying 32 inch TVs and groceries around all day to find that we still didn’t have power in the cabin, and…

…a whole lot of veggies! My mom got these from a coworker who offered beets, because no one ever wants beets, but I have been talking about my newly acquired love of beets for quite a while now so my mom said she would take some. Dawn must have been super excited about it because she threw in a little more than just beets!

Normally you roast the beets in the oven, but with no oven we threw them on the grill with an ear of corn. I was super hungry and couldn’t wait for the salad, though, so I made myself a sandwich.

I used the grill since that was the only thing working. I toasted my rye/pumpernickel, melted my Swiss cheese and warmed up my chicken. I finished this sandwich with some mustered and it was really awesome.

‘You are full of shit,’ my mom said when I was making this. ‘You talk about how you are a fancy city girl and you are toasting bread with a grill.’

Fancy city girl? That is just the hipster talking again.

My dad got home while the beets were cooling and got the power generator set up. It doesn’t make enough power to get the oven to work, though, so I got the electric wok out and sauteed the garlic and walnuts for the dressing with that! It worked great, and the salad turned out amazing.

My mom was very skeptical since she hates beets, but she loved it of course. My dad loved the salad and asked to finish it, which he never does. So basically I rocked this one out.

And speaking of rocking things out, my mom is rocking out her sock. She can’t get use to the tiny needles, though. I ask her how she is doing all the time and she looks at me a little irritated and complains about how it is really small.

‘I’d like to knit socks for Big Foot,’ she says.

I had to remind her that we Dutch woman have enormous feet, and she should be happy for once that she has those size 10s.

Imagine knitting socks if you were Asian.

She finished turning the heel last night and it looks great! Just a couple dropped stitches I had to fix. But, it is small, and her first try! So, I’m very proud.

(And laying off any insults because she needs a break from me being a jerk to her on the internet. Love you Mom!)

I have been working on this mesh bag for a couple days now and I feel like now I can safely say I hate it. Not the bag, the pattern. The bag is cute, so I’ll give it to Elisa; she wrote a cute pattern. But GOD I had to rip this thing out twice. Granted, one of the times was because I was too stubborn to look at the pattern once I got going, but still. The numbers never worked out, I was constantly counting and you know how much I hate that. Granted, I added like 20 stitches to the pattern because I wanted a wider bag, but still! It is supposed to be a 2 stitch pattern over four rows. That should still work with 20 extra stitches!

So, close up you can see how messed up this pattern is. It should be in nice little rows, all the mesh working out and being stripey and cute. Not. Gonna. Happen. I don’t mind, of course, it is just a bag I’m going to have over my shoulder when biking, it is the principle of the matter.

So you are supposed to knit a big rectangle, fold it in half, and crochet-seam the sides, which ended up looking crappy and I wish I would have just stuck to my gut and knit this thing in the round from the top down, ending with the three needle bind off. Am I right?!

The handles are amazing, though. Along the top of the bag you work the i-cord while picking up stitches along the top, so no handle seaming. And I love the i-cord!

Almost as much as I loved this salad from last night. Yes, you read that right. This was a beet, carrot, and diakon salad with a pecan, garlic, and grapefruit dressing. Sprinkled on top? Some fancy Irish cheese. Serious love.

It made up for the bag it was so good. Stupid bag.

Completely Spoiled

I have been eating amazingly well over the past three days. Just uploading the pictures I’ve taken since Thursday inspired the title of this post. No one in the world has eaten better than I, starting with Thursday’s dinner party with my friends Kasia and Anders. PT and I made guacamole (PT made guacamole), which was nothing compared to what we were served.

Starting with this beautiful Goat Cheese Flan served on a bed of salad. The Goat Cheese Flan was unbelievably good until you hit the halfway point, when it became ridiculously rich. I wanted to eat every bit of it, but just couldn’t! It was creamy and thick and cheesy! But non of us could finish it.

This beet soup on the other hand! I scraped the bowl clean. I’ve never had beet soup before, or chilled soup for that matter, but this was so good. Especially when you got a scoop with goat cheese in it.

But the highlight of the night was the dessert. This Strawberry Rhubarb Pie was one of the best pies I’ve ever eaten. The crust was buttery and crisp and flaky, the filling tasted like strawberries sweetly kissed by God. If God had just finished eating a sugar cane field. And the sugar cane field had been danced in by rhubarb fairies. The whole thing was set off so nicely by the basil ice cream! The whole dish was so fresh and seriously perfect in every way.

Friday for dinner PT and I had some food that needed to be eaten so we combined it into a dinner of sides. Brussel sprouts, plantains, and corn dogs. The brussel sprouts were broiled in the oven in olive oil, salt and pepper. The brussel sprouts themselves are amazing, but the best part of this method is when the outer leaves fall off while cooking and become brussel sprout chips, all crispy and salty!

Poor brussel sprouts get a bad rap. They are usually over cooked and droned in butter at Thanksgiving by meat eaters who have no idea what they are doing.

We also had some sad looking plantains laying around that had to be cooked Friday or not at all. So brussel sprouts and fried plantains? Sounds good to me! I pan fried these up in oil and they were better than ever. I had been trying fake butter before, but oil is the way to go. They cook faster and get browner and sweeter in the oil.

After dinner PT and I watched some baseball (the Tigers broke their 7 game winning streak/Twins won= one of us was happy), but it was such a lovely night PT suggested some ice cream. The Sweatshop has had a big week; a nonprofit asked for class donations (exposure! fame!), and I got a nice link on Carrots N Cake (exposure! fame!). There is no better place to celebrate exposure and fame than Margies.

We shared, which I don’t like doing, but it was midnight, and a lady can only eat so much ice cream after midnight before she starts looking like a balloon.

Loving Frank Cram Session 2009 – I’m up to page 182! Which is halfway. With three reading days left I’m on my 60 pages a day pace to finish by Knitting Book Club Monday. I haven’t forced myself to read this much for a deadline since my Columbia days.

Remember back in 2008 when I had a beet off? I knew I was supposed to like beets but had no idea what to do with them? I put them in a salad and wanted to die. I cooked them up with onions and garlic and also wanted to die. But I just knew that beets and I would someday get along, I just couldn’t think of a way to do it on my own.

Behold the Mark Bittman Beet Salad. What is amazing is that in the same picture you can see the fanciest thing PT and I have ever made. And maybe the most delicious.

With no food processor we just used a garlic press and chopped the walnuts. Without orange juice we used lemon juice. We roasted those beets, we mixed them up in the dressing, we did top it with some fresh Parmesan (AMAZING!), and served it over romaine.

Last night beets and I turned a corner. Thank goodness, because I really don’t want to live in a world where I don’t like a vegetable.

Not only have I been making progress on Loving Frank, but I’ve been rocking out this Summer Sweater! Don’t you love the little leaves? I also love a sweater where I don’t have to worry about the sizing. It is supposed to hang! And with tonight’s impromptu car trip to the suburbs for a very special evening, I’ll be able to get even more done.

But more on that later.
