One of my favorite anecdotes to tell when people ask me if my grandmother taught me to knit is, ‘No! In fact she tells me I should stop knitting so I don’t get arthritis.’ This is hilarious AND true, but arthritis is something I’ve really been worried about.
I knit a lot. A LOT. I tell people I average 6 hours a day, but it’s probably more like at least 6 hours a day. It’s my job! I’m designing and teaching making products to sell and knitting to have things to blog about.
In February I started feeling pain in the back of both hands between my ring and pinky fingers. I bought some muscle and joint cream that helped a lot. When I started feeling pain I put that cream on, stretched my hands out a bit, let it dry, and continued knitting.
About a month ago I started feeling tingling and irritation on the undersides of my wrists. It wasn’t really pain but more like uncomfortable tingling. It freaked me out. When it happened I stopped knitting and picked up a crochet project for the rest of the day. Crocheting gave my knitting muscles a rest.
Last week everything started hurting. The backs of my hands, my wrists – the tingling even started extending into my biceps. I stopped knitting and crocheting and instead spent a few days putting together jewelry kits. (I can’t just stop working altogether, right?!)
My twitter friends suggested icing, which I did and which helped, and acupuncture, which I looked into, but since I’ll be in Minnesota in a few weeks I can’t schedule the recommended series of sessions.
I planned to take a few days off completely when I was in Michigan this weekend when my mom pulled out these crafting gloves.
I put them on immediately and haven’t really taken them off. It’s like night and day! I’ve got no wrist pain and no wrist tingling at all. I have been knitting and crocheting like crazy and my hands and wrists feel awesome.
I’m completely floored! I thought about getting these supports before but I didn’t think they would work. It’s just fabric! What could it really do?
I’m in love. I can’t recommend these gloves enough. If you’ve got any pain or discomfort while knitting or crafting at all the first thing you should do is buy yourself a pair of these gloves.
And, as usual, my mom saves the day. She couldn’t be telling me to get busy, could she?!

I am so happy that the gloves work for you. I am well beyond that point and actually wear hand braces.
Hopefully you won’t ever get to that point.
The best thing I can suggest is to change activities occasionally and take breaks often.
I am primarily an embroiderer but find I can’t do that for very long anymore. So I crochet for a while, and now my girls have gotten me into knitting. I have many projects going at once so I can change up as needed. That’s my story and I’m sticking to it.
Good luck and take care of those hands.

What you need to start doing is a stretching program for your hands! Hold your arm straight ahead, parallel to the floor, and pull your fingertips back to stretch your arm muscles (with a locked elbow). It sounds like you’re getting a little bit of early warning carpal tunnel syndrome (And you don’t want to have to have surgery for that).
Heck, if I were you I would visit a physical therapist for a set of stretches to help alleviate this issue. It’s your livelihood, after all!

I was thinking the same thing as Katie S..that it sounds like early Carpal Tunnel.
My step-dad had it bad and he had tingling in his wrists.
6 hours a day???
freaking jealous.
If I can knit for a couple hours added up I am happy. If I can knit for an hour straight
It was a good day for me.
LOTS of distractions.
be well!!!

Whew girl! I’m happy to hear your Mom hooked you up with those gloves. Mom’s are the best when it comes to fixing a remedy.
I have a wrist brace I wear on my right hand when the going gets tough.
6 hours a day? You’re so hardcore!

Allyson,
Where can I get a pair? I have pain in my hand at times when I knit too.

I’ve seen them at JoAnn, Diane! Near the knitting needles. I know my mom snagged them from JoAnn a few years ago. They will help for sure!

So glad to hear that they work for you!
I get sore wrists, but (knock on wood) haven’t had trouble with my hands, yet. As soon as I do, though… I’m getting these gloves!
btw- I’ve heard some people say that staying active with your hands wards off arthritis… I’m hoping that those folks are right!
