Socks are time consuming knits. Especially over the knee socks, like Welly Socks, designed to line your rubber Wellies or any knee high boot.
But come on – what we like most about Welly Socks isn’t the fact that they are socks, it’s that they fold over our boots and give us a fun pop of color between boot and pant. So with this pattern I’ve cut out the sock entirely and designed a leg warmer that folds over the top of your boots. Fabric covered buttons make these even more fun than the original.
And bonus! You will have downright WARM calves.
Worked in bulky yarn and size 11 double pointed needles, these puppies are such a quick knit you’ll want to make a different color for each day of the week.
WELLY WARMERS
Finished Measurements Small/Medium (Large/XLarge) Around 10” (12”) long and 7” (10”) wide at cuff, unstretched. Shown in size Small/Medium.
MATERIALS
Yarn One (two) skeins Lion Brand Wool-Ease Thick & Quick, 80% acrylic, 20% wool. 108 yds/170g: Taupe
Needles Set of 5 size 11 (8 mm): double pointed needles. Size 11 (8 mm) 16” circular needle (optional). Adjust needle size if necessary to obtain the correct gauge.
Notions 4 1 ¼” fabric covered buttons, and fun fabric to cover them.
GAUGE
6 st and 7 rows in K2P2 rib = 2”, unstretched.
NOTE
Bar Inc: With your left needle, pick up stitch between needles and knit it through the back.
I chose yellow buttons for my Welly Warmers because of the yellow zipper in the back of my boots, which are not Wellies, but some super cute Steve Madden boots PT got me for Christmas. The yellow is so perfect it looks like my Welly Warmers are built into my boots.
A fun shortcut to the boot sock dilemma and a really fun accessory, I hope you like my Welly Warmers pattern!

you’re right about the purpose of those socks- it is alll about the cute foldover! and with the actual socks, i always have the problem of them sagging down throughout the day and getting uncomfortable. so this is a brilliant idea that i’m going to have to try.

Wow! I really want to make these. I have small calves so my boots always fit big at the top but I am going to make these and I think that will solve the problem!

These are too cute! I *almost* wish I lived somewhere cold enough to actually need these.

Allyson — These turned out SO cute! I love them. I don’t have any boots they would work with, so now I’m sitting here thinking I need new boots — DOH! p

I wasn’t relishing the idea of paying $40 for the cable knit top welly socks from Hunter, nor knitting a sock that large. I think I will try making these and sewing a fleece sock liner (like Hunter’s), because I definitely need the warmth and bulk of the whole liner, but want the cuteness of the knit top. Thanks!

Where can I buy the Wool-ease Thick & Quick in UK?
Comment by Barbara — December 31, 2011 @ 4:18 pm
Hi Barbara,
I’m not sure where you can get it in the stores in the UK, but you can order it on line from Lion Brand here: http://cache.lionbrand.com/cgi-bin/sqlsearch.fcgi?search=Search&store=%2Fstores%2Feyarn&resultPageTemplate=ResultPage.html&resultItemTemplate=ResultItem.txt&noResultPageTemplate=NoResultPage.html&case=no&primaryServer=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.lionbrand.com&minPrice=0&noBoolean=1&searchText=wool+ease+thick+and+quick&Go.x=0&Go.y=0&sT=2
Or you can sub any super bulky yarn you can find.
