Every woman, at some point in her life, should take a pair of scissors to her own head.
I’ve never gotten my hair professionally cut. I went from having my mom cut my hair to just doing it myself.
I use to have really long, curly hair. Three summers ago I just cut it all off myself. It was one of the most liberating things I’ve ever done. I wasn’t hiding behind my hair anymore. I couldn’t hide behind anything! It was just me and my face.
It is terrifying, though, every time I do it. My brain is saying, ‘WHAT ARE YOU DOING?!’ But I keep telling myself, ‘It’s just hair! Nothing bad can happen!’
When I’m done cutting it always looks terrible. It’s greasy from touching it so much and flat and I feel like I look like a boy. I think about how people won’t be able to tell that I’m a girl.
And then it dries.
And I look like a girl.
A cute girl. Who didn’t just spend $60 on a hair cut. Who just balls-ed out on her OWN HAIR! Crazy/scary/amazing/stupid/kinda hot.

HOTT!

I cut my own hair when I was broke and working at Blood Bath and Beyond. I looked like I lost a bet. You are cute and much better than me at this. Knitting skillz = hair cutting skillz? Perhaps…

Haven’t done that.
I used to have super short hair and even would get it cut at the barbershop on base when I was at chemical warfare school. I always laughed at the uptight soldiers when a female Marine would say “wait a minute, I’m next” at the barbershop.
None of that now. It’s milkmaid braids for me. Best under a helmet.

Super cute! I wish I had the guts to chop off my own hair…maybe -after- the wedding. I’ve spent the past 14months growing it out..so I need to enjoy it a little bit more.

I last hacked my hair in, mmm, I ‘m gonna say 6 months ago. that was my last hair cut. My dad’s girlfriend cuts hair but never has time to “fix”mine so I will probably hack mine again. I am letting it get long again but I have rarely EVER paid for a haircut. it’s like a once a decade treat.
YOURS is ADORABLE and of the tid bits of your face you post I have even loved your hair style and cut. makes me want my hair short again. I have wavy curly hair and i LOVE my messy who gives a crap style.
you do it better!
I hack my son’s hair too. it’s fun!
GOOD FOR YOU!!!

Wow I am SO impressed!! With the exception of trimming pieces of hair by the front of my face, I’ve never tried to cut my own hair. I’m sure I’d destroy it. I have crazy thick wavy hair and it needs lots of layers or it will be a disaster!
Love the hair

Um, I want to go balls out on my hair. I want to not spend $60 on a hair cut. Especially since I am trying to save for traveling expenses in Spain! Allyson, you are an amazing woman!

I learned to cut my own hair when I was 17, and read a few articles, then bought some clippers and the selfcutsystem, which is a special haircutting mirror where you can see your head 360 degrees. Its a must if you cut your own hair. It comes with videos that teach you step by step which was a great way to learn.
I now blog about self haircutting at howtocutmyownhair.com and i encourage everyone to learn to cut their own hair. I save money and alot of time doing it myself. I recommend you do it too.
Check out the blog
